Our client, a local organization with provincial reach, was executing an ambitious strategic and board development plan. Board attrition meant that there were vacancies to fill, and their basic annual survey showed high satisfaction and engagement among board members.

Our client was concerned that they did not clearly understand their blind spots and gaps in their board composition, and wanted to better understand how they could enable and empower their board to be more efficient and collaborative. They contracted us to lead the development, execution, and analysis of a comprehensive survey among board members.

Meeting with the Board Executives, we gained an understanding of how this board worked together and the challenges they were facing. 

We then developed a strategy to gather data using three methods to support the questions we were building for this client.

Meeting as a large group, as individuals, and gathering data through an online tool customized to meet the needs of this particular client, we had a significant amount of high-quality, reliable data to share with our client.

The Outcome
A deep understanding that enabled the creation of a successful plan.

A relatively speedy project, this survey was planned, delivered, and reported on in less than 7 weeks. We provided our client with rich data that provided a granular understanding of the specific skills related to operations, oversight, governance, finances, and more. As well, our data provided a roadmap to guide the board on the communication preferences and capacity of its members.

The report was used to refine board processes, and to support recruitment of new board members to fill skills gaps. Our client has reported to us that the survey was transformational for them – as they felt for the first time that they fully understood their capacity and needs.
